Our Introductory Meetings are the best place to learn more about Mosaic Commons! We review some general information about cohousing, and talk in detail about our group, our history, what we are working on right now, and what our plans are for moving forward. You can view the Agenda on our website.
Introductory Meetings are normally held on the third Sunday of the month at 1:00. See our website for the next scheduled meetings. For directions, childcare arrangements, or pickup from the MBTA, please contact us at info@mosaic-commons.org or at 508-869-2367.
Once you've attended an Introductory Meeting, you're welcome to join us for a General Meeting. These are usually held on the first and third Sundays of the month, from 3:30-6:30. See our website for the next scheduled meetings. Children are welcome, and childcare is available. General Meetings are often followed by potluck dinners.
When you attend your first General Meeting, you're welcome to participate in the discussions as much as you feel comfortable. It's also fine to sit back and listen! We use a color card system to help facilitate our discussions and consensus process - it's described on page 27 of The Cohousing Handbook, and also on our website.
After attending a general meeting, you have several choices, each of which have some advantages and disadvantages for you. The higher your level of participation, the more you can help shape our community into a place you want to live.
You can continue to attend meetings as a prospective member and participate in dicsussions. This requires no commitment on your part, but does not allow you to participate in our consensus process, and doesn't give you any status in unit selection.
Associates are people who are actively involved in the process of building our community but are not ready to make the full financial commitment. To become an Associate, we ask that you actively participate in the group for 30 days, and are familiar with the history and process of creating cohousing (we recommend that you review the cohousing.org website and read the cohousing books: Cohousing: A Contemporary Approach to Housing Ourselves by Kathryn McCamant & Charles Durrett, and The Cohousing Handbook: Building a Place for Community by Chris Hanson.)

Associates will select units after Equity Members, by seniority. Associates participate in the consensus process but cannot block consensus.

Equity Members are people who are
on the path to contributing a minimum of 5% of their expected unit cost, per
our working budget. They must fill the requirements above for Associates, and
the group must come to consensus to accept new Equity Members. Households wishing
to become Equity Members must meet an initial threshold contribution amount
of $1500 and make monthly payments in the amounts at right until 5% of their
unit cost is met. Exceptions may be made by the Finance Committee on a case
by case basis. (Policy to be revisited on or before March 15, 2002.)
Equity Members participate in the consensus process and can block consensus. They will have first choice in unit selection, by seniority.
Friends are people who aren't able to come to meetings regularly but would like to be kept informed about our progress or get involved at a later time. Friends do not participate in decision making but will have next choice in unit selection after Equity Members and Associates, by seniority. Friends are welcome to join us for social events. Dues for Friends are $25 per year.
